  • There IS such a thing as a free lunch! This month the Illinois Farm Families are hosting a contest on their Facebook page. Simply “like” their page, add a comment (share a recipe, ask a question, etc) and you will be entered to win one of three prizes
  • Grand Prize (1 winner): $500 gift card to Ultra Foods.
  • Runner Up (2 winners) $250 gift cards to Ultra Foods.

Contest ends July 31, 2014 and winners will be announced by August 15, 2014. Full details and rules are available at watchusgrow.org.

The best part of this contest (besides the potential to get free groceries) is that it gives us a chance to connect with real farmers. This is great, because the more we know about how food is grown and distributed, the more empowered we are to make good choices for our families.  I recently read a blog by fellow IFF ambassador Amina Nevels who offered 3 ways integrity can be restored in the food industry. One thing she mentioned is the excessive use of labeling that causes mistrust for consumers. As Amina notes, “when 100% Orange Juice is labeled Gluten Free or Chicken labeled Hormone Free, it calls the credibility of the entire system into question. The reality is that all 100% Fruit Juice is Gluten Free and poultry (both organic and conventional) are raised without the use of  hormones due to FDA regulations.” O

One of the best way we can cut through this confusion is to go to the source and connect with the farmers who produce the food.

Another thing I like about this contest is it compels friends, family and acquaintances to connect with  Illinois Farm Families through their website and Facebook page. Both sites are chock full of terrific information, recipes and creative gardening ideas and both offer answers to perplexing questions such as “Is buying organic worth the extra price?” So check out the IFF website, Like their Facebook page and enter to win free groceries ~ good luck! xo
