Raising #VoraciousReaders, Building Community with @meatheadsburger

This post is about burgers, books and building community and it all starts with Meatheads . Meatheads is a local fast-causal family restaurant that has 14 locations around Chicago. It first came to our neighborhood a few years ago and since it opened I have been a huge fan because the food is really good, the space is really cute (awesome booths), and everyone who works there is super nice. Lately there is another reason I have become a Meathead Lover and that its commitment to building community with their “Take Care Policy.”

Meatheads believes that community starts “by taking care of each other.”

As part of their “Take Care” policy, Meatheads looks for ways to help promote education, sports and teamwork. Looking to raise money for your school? Meatheads  partners with local schools to help raise funds. Want to experience a little “Friday Nights” charm? Meatheads posts local High School scores on their back wall. Meatheads also rewards good sportsmanship by encouraging customers to nominate local HS athletes as part of their “Meatheads of the Month,” program and they offer  “Meathead of the Game” awards to young players (little league, etc) who show good sportsmanship and motivation during games. The folks at Meatheads want to get kids reading all summer long so they created the  Voracious Readers Program.  This program inspires kids to read with an incentive. If a child reads 5 books and fills out this easy certificate, he/she will be awarded a FREE burger, As a former kindergarten teacher, I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep our kids reading over the summer.

Research shows that incentive programs such as the “Voracious Readers Program” are effective because they get reluctant readers READING and encourage non-reluctant readers to READ MORE!

I love this Mural at Meatheads

As part of the Voracious Reading program, Meatheads is hosting a variety of FREE Summer Reading Parties at each of their locations. These parties include stories, crafts and in some cases special guest appearances. I am thrilled to be hosting several of these parties ~ as they are a culmination of so many things I love: books, crafts, family, fun, friends, burgers and a raffle (win a signed Robbie Gould pennant).

I like a bag that goes straight to the point.

Meatheads also has a great Facebook Page and Pinterest Board where they  highlight a new book everyday, so be sure to check them out for new suggestions and fun activities (the have a super cute potato decorating contest going on as well). Finally, as part of my partnership with Meatheads, I had the great pleasure of hosting a literacy luncheon for some of my bloggy friends. Many of the bloggers wrote about their experiences and some are offering a $25 Meatheads Giftcard Giveaway so be sure to check them out:

Note: I am working with Meatheads to help promote their Voracious Reading program. Although they have compensated me for my time, they did not compensate me for this post. All opinions (including my love of burgers) are my own.
