True Confession: My son is a “Safety Town” drop-out. Safety Town is a 2 week program for kids ages 4-6 sponsored by area park districts and community centers near Chicago. Kids from far and wide come to participate in this supposedly “dynamic” program that teaches kids how to be safe. JRB went twice, cried hysterically both days and vowed never to set foot in the community center again. You see, “Safety Town” terrified JRB and although teaching kids about safety (ie: stranger danger, wearing helmets when riding bikes, etc) is extremely important ~ the way the program presented the info scared my kid to death! And you know what ~ I totally understood. I was the same way. As a child, I refused to take the school bus for years after our teacher showed us a “School Bus Safety Video” that showed a girl sliding down a snowbank, under a bus that soon drove over her trapped body. The message: Don’t play on snow banks near the bus stops ~ but for me the message was clear, NEVER go on a school bus, ever.
So when the folks at “The Mother Company” told me about their upcoming show, “The Safety Show“, I was thrilled. The show is designed to empower kids to be safe and the means in which it teaches this message is sweet, gentle and not-scarey. The host of the show is Ruby, who is lovely and kind and travels via balloons. (She has often been referred to as cross between Mary Poppins and Mr Rogers, which is SO TRUE). There are songs, animated stories and even a craft (with duct tape!!) that help illustrate in a proactive and positive manner the things kids can do to keep themself safe, including listening to their body and paying attention to the “uh-oh” feeling. It is really a lovely show.
The Safety Show launches October 15 and will be available for download and DVD. I encourage EVERY parent of kids ages 3-8 to watch this with your kids.
