ok, this is cool!

The Great @KNEX Project of 2013 #awesome

Every once in a while something really amazing happens and this time it has to do with K’NEX toys. I am a HUGE fan of K’NEX because it invites kids to become mega creative as their build, explore and create. Sometimes the toys are opened ended as is the case with their value pack of K’NEX and other times there is an end to the journey as is the case with the Typhoon Frenzy Roller Coaster Building Set. But no matter how you slice it, K’NEX is one of those toys that keeps kids excited, engaged and helps them hone valuable skills (fine motor, hand-eye coordination and visual spatial). Okay so here is the cool part. A few weeks ago, I was invited to take place in the TOYS “R” US® MOM BLOGGER PROMOTION! Basically what that means is I received a Box of 7 unbelievably cool K’NEX sets and building kits. It was truly an embarrassment of riches ~ and even JRB, who has never met a toy he didn’t like knew that even HE couldn’t keep the amazing toys for himself. so I sent a letter to a bunch of his buddies and their moms and invited then to take part in the GREAT K’NEX PROJECT of 2013 where we gave 7 different kids 7 different toys and ask them to play with them, review them and send in the pioctures. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be sharing these reviews. And at the end of the project we will give one FREE K’NEX SET to one of our loyal readers. It’s sort of like watch one of those game shows where one member of the studio audience and one lucky viewer both win the same prize…so stay tuned for details about the giveaway. In the meantime, let’s start the reviews…This one comes from Ryan G of Glenview and his toy is the K’NEX Super Mario Thwomps Building Set.38527-Nintendo-Thwomps-model-front

“From Ryan’s Mom: Overall, the K’NEX Thwomps building set has been a fun toy for my child to build and play with afterward.   If your child loves Mario Bros. and building toys, this toy set is a great one.  My child likes to play with it even after building it, so it hasn’t been one of those building toys that just sit on the shelf.  There are fun features of the set that can keep a kid occupied.  The Mario figure comes apart and has two different modes, jumping and running.  There is a part of the set that fold out for more play, which is nice.  One thing to watch out for, though, is that the ‘thwomps smashing’ part tends to come apart if you are rough with it.

Right now, my son seems to want to play with the set everyday, so we have it out.  When we are ready to store it, it would require a larger bin for storage in order to keep some of it together. Overall, I think it’s a great toy for the price.

Pros: Fun to build; not too hard or too easy. Once it is built, there is a lot to do.  It is fun to have Mario and Luigi go through the set.

Cons: The rubber band that makes the Thwomps smash broke, so we had to find a similar one around the house.  It seems to work fine with the new rubber band. Some of the pieces were missing (or we may have lost them since they are small), so we had to use an old K’NEX set to make it work.  Since K’NEX pieces are pretty standard, my son was able to make it work.  It would be nice to have some extra pieces, just in case.

And here is a description from the company:

Go on a brand new adventure with Fire Mario™ & Silver Luigi™ as they journey through a castle course!  Featuring K’NEX’s all new jump disk and launcher that allow Mario to run and jump, like he does in the game.  Build Fire Mario & Silver Luigi and drop them through the warp pipe to enter the course. Look out for the Thwomps – slam them down to open your path.  Make your way past the Thwomps, collecting coins as you go – don’t forget to grab the Power Up mushroom at the top!  Drop through another warp pipe and guess what – there’s another side to play on!  Use the sliding platform to cross the lava.  Who will you find behind the door?  It’s a Bone Goomba™!  Hit the target to defeat him, pop-up the flag and you’ve cleared the course!  Combine your Thwomps building set with the rest of the K’NEX Super Mario™ building set line to take Mario on an even BIGGER adventure!  For ages 8+.  Suggested retail price is $59.99.  Available exclusively at Toys “R” Us. And if you want to see the game in action check out this video
