Great Family Restaurant. $50 Sweeps ~ Have Dinner on Us at Houlihan’s!

But first let’s get the legal stuff out of the wayCompensation was provided by Houlihan’s via MomTrends.  The opinions expressed herein are mine and are not indicative of the opinions of Houlihan’s or Momtrends.

Family, fun, great food, casual atmosphere, healthy options, “dough-nuggets” ~ those are the words I would use to describe our experience tonight at Houlihan’s. The family oriented restaurant has been around since the 70′s and now  83 restaurants later (yep there are 83 Houlihan’s in the US) the restaurant continues to serve high quality food at a reasonable price. Of course things have changed since the 70′s and 80′s when I first started eating at Houlihans. My parents were divorced and every Wednesday we’d go out to dinner with our dad and we always ended up going to Bennigan’s, Houlihan’s or Shelton’s. I remember I always liked Houlihan’s because it was a happy restaurant, had lots of choices and it never took too long which is key when you are in High School and have a ton of homework. Today, the happy atmosphere remains which was evident tonight by our Justin Bieber look-alike waiter who was so sweet and good-natured, answering  questions, offering free refills and even being patient as JRB asked for a “spot of tea,” inquired about ALL the specials, and told the waiter the food was “restaurant quality” (highest praise from JRB).

For me, Houlihan’s was a welcome retreat. We are in another cold spell and spent much of the day at a super-sized gym that has a bunch of indoor areas to climb, jump and run. By the time we got to the restaurant we were exhausted, starved and freezing. But all that melted away once we were inside. The hostess was kind enough to put us in a big ‘ole booth that was warm and cozy. The menu still offers all the great appetizers that made the restaurant famous (Houlihan’s has often been voted the happiest Happy Hour by local media) but they also have updated their menu to include healthful options for diners like me who yearn for “super foods” as much as possible.

We started the meal with the aforementioned tea and the waiter kindly brought some ice cubes on the side for my 8 year old tea expert. We then had an appetizer which JRB choose ~ chicken tenders which were seriously amazing. Over the years JRB and I have had our fair share of chicken tenders and frankly it is rare that we are served tenders that are crispy in the outside and tender and juicy on the inside (with REAL white mean chicken). Fried chicken is my achilles heel and these tenders were well worth the splurge into a place I rarely go…fried food land.

For our entrees, Jackson and I ordered  the Miso Grilled Salmon and Petit Filet Mignon. The salmon was from their “lighter fare” menu and was paired with quinoa and edamame and the steak came with 2 sides and a salad or soup so JRB ordered the baked potato and a fruit cup on the side which for him is everything he loved. As for the soup, I made him order French Onion Soup which he didn’t like but soup came with the meal and I always like to convince him to at least try something new whenever possible. I also ordered a super power salad that included kale, berries, goat cheese and poppyseed dressing. The True Piece de Resistance was dessert, which were “Dough-Nuggets” i.e.: warm cinnamon sugar doughnuts served with a sip (warm apple pie compote).

It’s been years since I have been to Houlihan’s but I am so glad we went. It was warm, nourishing, comfortable, and happy and a really sweet way to end my weekend with my favorite dude! Now it’s YOUR turn…
