Rainsticks

Teach your kids the importance of water conservation by introducing them to a rainstick!
This project was always a favorite when I taught Kindergarten. My students loved how realistic the rainsticks sounded. I loved how easy they were to make.

You will need

Empty paper towel roll
Markers, paint, or colored paper
½ cup of dry beans, rice or lentils
Aluminum foil
Tape

Directions

1. Securely cover one end of the paper towel roll with paper and tape.
   
2. Cut two pieces of aluminum foil so they are approximately half the length of the paper towel roll.
   
3. Turn the foil pieces into coils by first rolling them into long ropes and then curling them around a pencil.
4. Place coils in the paper towel roll.
   
5. Add beans, rice or lentils.
   
6. Securely cover the other end of the paper towel roll with paper and tape.
   
7. Decorate the rainstick with paint, construction paper or markers.
